My photo shoot took place in and around a graveyard. I thought this would be an ideal place due to the genre and style of my magazine indie/rock. The girl I used suited it very well and I chose her carefully as her look suited the style of the magazine.

Article draft

This is a rough draft to my article that will probably be altered as i go along.

Confessions of an Indie Cindy

One of the new unique sensations has burst onto into the charts this week, Jessica Lynch. Described as an 'Indie Cindy' she has taken the indie charts by storm. Her unique style, lyrics and personality makes her one of the best solo artists around. Censored wants to find out her reasoning behind why she decided to become a singer alone and get a bit of an insight into the life of Jessica.

When did you first realise that you wanted to persue music as a career?

Well i've always loved music since i was little but it's not always been Indie/Rock. I used to go witrh the trends, dressing as what they call 'fresh' and into all the pop music. My sister was the one that really changed that because she was the one that listened to indie and rock. It made me realise that the lyrics were a lot more meaningful and were so much more my style.[laughs]

What made you become a solo artist because you see a lot of groups around now?

I've always been very independant, doing things on my own and i have been told i am quite bossy when i don't get what i want, So i dont think a group would be the best idea.

Being a new artist is it quite scary being on your own?

No not particularly. I tend to just take things as the come. I mean dont get me wrong sometimes it is very overwhelmingbut i get a thrill off it and it gets me all excited. I never really feel alone anyway because i mean i have my family and friends and most importantly my fans which is great.[smiles]

What are the meanings behind your lyrics ? Are they personal experiences or do they just come into your head?

Some are personal meanings yes, I fond it easier writing about things like that because i feel like the song is a lot more meaningful and personal for example my track breathe. Now that is a personal song to me. But yeh some of my songs to come off the top of my head which seem to be more my fun songs which are really good to perform.

How do you think other people perceive you?

To be honest i dont really care. People can see me how they like and interpret me how they want. I'm a very strange quirky individual that has my own style so people can perceive me hoe they like. Since i've been younger i've never been one to follow the trends really. I hate superficial, materialistic people so pound to a penny they dont like me either. [laughs] The press are the worse for this they irritate me so much. They judge you because you are different and that's not fair, i act just as i would if i wasn't famous i don't really understand why i should change. I remember when i would read the headlines and critise celebs but now i'm the complete opposite.

Has any other celeb ever said anything about you or you about them?

Erm yeh they have actually let me think, N-dubz ring a bell? Well yeh i met them once and they all just looked down their noses at me like i was nothing i couldnt believe it. I mean none of them could talk have you seen them in all fairness you can tell they are putting on an act.

You mentioned how you like to be unique and different- Have you always been like this?

Yeh i've mentioned that a lot! [laughs] I tell you there is absolutly no point following everyone else cause why would you want someone else to look like you? I love things from top shop but i like to mix it all up adding bits onto my clothes and cutting them up it's great! [laughs]

So the new Album Breathe, very exciting how did you come about it?

Yes very exciting indeed i can't wait for it to be released. It's kind f scary everythings happened so fast [laughs] Well i used to do like little gigs and stuff at my local bar and i suppose one day i just got luck because well here i am now. [laughs]

Well thank you Jess for giving us an insight into your life it really has been a pleasure. I can see your new album going very far and i hope everything works out for you i really do.

Thank you its been a pleasure letting you know a bit about me. I will keep you updated. [smiles]

Moodboard-Artists

Here i have produced a moodboard with different artists on that could appear on the front of my magazine i am producing. When i was searching for the images i found it difficult to find pictures of female artists or bands that are Rock/Indie. This has helped me realise that i am on the right track with wanting my magazine to appeal to more the female audience.
Most of the pictures i have used are using direct address which has given me some ideas for my own photographs. I like how the photos look natural and this is how i want mine to be.

Planning

For my Magazine i will be using lots of different Equipment/Technologies. I will be using In Design to produce my magazine and photoshop to edit my pictures that i have taken. I will be using my digitak Camera to take my pictures and various lighting to capture a good effect. I may also use a tripod so that my pictures will not be blury and be of high quality. I will be taking photos for my front page, My contents page and my featured article. I think most of my pictures will be taken outside at night but i will be using the flood lights for the lighting as they are situated where i will be taing my pictures.

Magazine Institution IPC and EMAP

IPC publishes more mainstream magazines such as 'Look' and 'NME' which isnt really what i can look at for my magazine as mine is more Rock/Indie rather than mainstream. Whereas EMAP has published more rock magazines which will benefit me more as this is the genre that i intend to do.

Analysis of a featured article

I like the layout of this featured atrivcle i think it is very simple and well laid out. i like how the background as been spread out over the two pages and the writing is over the top. I like how the writing has a brown box behind it so you can see it more clearly but also it id in keeping with the background of the image. It is very simple which i like and i would like my magazine article to be like this. It has a big header which informs oyou of what it is about. It has the questions that were askied in bold lettering and the answers in smaller lettering which i think it is a good idea and i think i will do this in mine.

Contents Page-NME

This is a contents page for the magazine NME. It has one main image without any smaller images. The main image was featured on the front of the cover so when you turn to the contents page it is again the first thing you see and the first thing you will start to read. This contents page only really has writing on it which i find quite bland and boring. It still has all the page numbering but i dont think it stands out enough and not in keeping with the genre i intend to do. Although it is quite bold i dont think i will use something like this for my contents page and i dont think i will get anything from it. It doesnt have the Contents page wrtten at the top but instead has 'NME THIS WEEK' written on which i think is different but a good idea as it different from normal contents pages.

Contents Page-Kerrang

On a contents page there is generally more than one image. There is normally one large image than smaller images which this contents page has. The smaller images are pages with other articles in the magazine. The header 'Contents Page' is situated at the top of the page which gives us a clear indication of what this page is. The bigger image is a picture of the artist appearing on the front showing it is the biggest article and the best one to read. Each picture has a number on showing what page number the articles will be on and so does the writing.

I like how it is set out by using pictures of other articles instead of just writing as it look a lot morw appealing than just having writing. For the style of magazine i am doing i think the contents page needs to look a lot like this as it is bold and goes with genre of rock/indie.

Feedback 9.2.10

Kate, you are making some reasonable progress but you are going to have to work on this project more from home and during your frees to ctach up with the group and to stay on top of the deadlines. Lesson time alone will not be long enough for you to complete this project. You must aim to complete your research and planning by half term and then be able to return to college after the holiday with a rough draft of your ferature article to hadn in to me that i will draft for you and all your pictures taken ready for editing. You need maximum time for the poduction of the project itself as you need time to re-draft the completed pages at the end based on feedback from your audience and teachers.

See me in lesson and I will run through the different tasks on the checklist. You should now be working on your audience research and aiming to get the results and evalustion of thses results on your blog next. Don't forget to refect on how you will use these results to informyour designs.

My Magazine

Genre: Rock/Indie
Target Audience: My magazine will be for young people aged between 16 and 24 mainly girls.
Aim: My aim is to make this magazine stand out from the rest and make it classy but still intouch with the rock/Indie genre. I will have the main image a girl as my magazine is for mainly girls. It will probably have the theme of black and red as this signifies rock.
Names: A few ideas for names in my magazine could be, Censored, Indie Cindy, Tuning In, Energy, Starstruck.
I will be using direct adress to draw the reader in and make them want to buy my magazine. My header will be placed at the top of the in big letters so people will know what my magazine is called. I will have straplines to inform people of other bands or more stories inside. I will have artists on the front showing other featured articles. My magazine I have decided it will be a weekly magazine.

Research-Rock Tribune

This magazine even though it is a rock magazine it also has a hint of eligance in it which is very unique and different. The image used is direct address so the band is looking straight out to the reader drawing them in and making them want to buy it. The main article is about the band nightwish as this is the biggest bit of text so we know the featured aticle will be on them. Other articles are written in smaller writing that will be further on in the magazine. The cover is set out well and the writing from the other articles doesnt overpower the cover so we are still drawn into the cover.
The colours are well chosen and we can clearly tell it is rock by the black and red and dark colours. It has a strapline giving us an insite to either more articles or new bands maybe.
I like the way this magazine is set out as it is simple but affective and is unique compared to other rock magazines.

Research-NME magazine cover

This is a magazine cover from the company NME. The header of this magazine is bold and a different colour to the rest of the magazine so it stands out more and you are able to understand easier what the magazine is called. The title of the band is clear and helps to promote the band as it stands out. This would be the main story in the magazine. The image is good as they have used direct address drawing the reader in as they are looking out of the magazine to the reader. There is also smaller text which signifys different articles in the magazine which maybe aren't as important as the main story. The straplines indicate either other articles and promoting other bands which will help achieve larger sales.
The colour co-ordination however is a bit miss match. Personally the red and yellow dont look right and dont really show the genre of the magazine. But by using these colours this could be the magazines unique selling point and this is what makes it differnt from the rest. The layout of the magazine looks a bit full and almost takes your attention away from the main image as things just seem to be too full and packed. I will ensure in my magazine is not overloaded with text and overloading my front cover.

Research-Kerrang magazine covers

The header on the magazine is very bold and helps attract attention to the magazine. The image covers the page and they are using direct address to draw the reader into it. I have noticed on most of the Kerrang cover the image overlaps the header with the main person but this makes the magazine that little bit different and more interesting. You get a clear indication to who the image if of 'Biffy Clyro' Which is good because it is the first thing you see when you look at the magazine. Undernegth the name of the band is the article 'Unfold the puzzle of life...' which makes you want to read what the article is about and what they have to say. This magazine is also appeals to you because of the 'Free poster special' advertising free things you get with the magazine which is good for promoting the magazine. Also this magazine has on the cover another smaller article which readers will be interested in. The straplines also help to sell the magazine by highlighting stars or other stories/selections.
This magazine is well presented and suited to the genre of music it is promoting. The colours are eye catching even though they are quite dark colours, black, white and red they go well together and look suitable. The images are well set out on the page and the cover isn't too crowded with pictures and information so it's easy to read and it still draws you in.

Coventions of a music magazine

The image of the magazine, the content and the name of the magazine must fit the target audience. The colour scheme is also important too in creating a 'house style' ans in appealing to the target audience.
Mode of address is the way a text creates a relationship with its audience. The most common MOD in magazine is direct address where the photograph on the cover they will have the person looking straight out of the magazine inviting the reader in. Indirect address is where the person is looking away from the reader. It is not a convention but it is still used on magazines it's just not as popular.
Magazines usually include celebrities on the cover to help sales and increase profit. The front cover of the magazine is the main advertisement because it has to be representative of the magazine as a whole. It should be eye catching and interesting to draw the reader in. The colours should not only reflect the target audience but the genre of music eg. Rock, red and black. The header/title will create the 'Brand image' and the product will become instantly recognisable to the audience. Sometimes a slogan is used under the header to make it stand out to other rivals. The leading caption usually dominates the page and this is featured on your featured article and this should anchor the cover story. Straplines usually go at the top or bottom of the page highlighting other stars in the magazine or other stories/ selections in the magazine.

Research

I have decided to create a Indie/Rock magazine for mainly females and some males. I have chosen to do this as i have not seen many Indie/Rock magazines aimed at females. I will be looking at:
-Colour schemes
-Font styles
-Layouts
By looking at these things i will be able to adapt my magazine and make mine better than the others and make it stand out and appealing.

Preliminary task

This is my Preliminary task front cover that i did in IN Design. I think overall the cover looks quite bland and not very interesting. Even though the colours stand out against the black background it doesn't really appeal to me. It has given me a good insight on how to use things such as photoshop and IN Design that i can now use my skills and transfer them to when i make my proper magazine to make it look better. I think my final design needs to be able to stand out more using a better style of title and make sure that all the gaps are filled up as it looks a bit boring and plain. Also the picture needs to be a lot bigger covering a lot more of the page as at the moment there is too much wasted space. I think i need to use a better colour scheme as the colours on this magazine don't really go well together and class a bit too much. Overall i don't like this magazine but it has helped me understand how to work the different programs to make my magazine.

Initial Ideas

I have chosen to produce a music magazine with the genre Indie/Rock. My target audience is aimed at mostly girls aged around 16-24 years old. It will also have things in it to suit boys so they can also purchase the magazine. By offering my magazine to the both male and female audience it allows more sales of the magazine not just limiting it to males or females. I have chosen to aim my magazine at mainly girls because most magazines are aimed at boys and often have boy bands on the front cover or male solo artists hardly ever girl bands or solo artists. On my front cover i will be using a picture of a young female solo artist new to the music industry promoting her and the magazine. The colour scheme of the front colour of the front cover will be either red, black and white or red black and grey. On the cover it will also include smaller headlines informing about other artists. I have chosen to use these colours because red is a very bold colour which stands out against the black, white or grey background making the magazine more appealing. This will be my USP (Unique selling point). I will be looking at magazines with a similar genre such as karrang and NME for ideas on how to make my magazine sell. I will also be doing research like questionnaires to find out what seems popular with my target audience. By doing this it will allow me to adapt my magazine to what the audience wants to read. My magazine will be bold and eye-catching so it will stand out from the rest and not blend into the background like every other.
